Leadership Candidate Ted Hsu Supports ECE Workers
[TORONTO, ON] – Last Tuesday marked the 23rd annual Child Care Worker and Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day in Ontario. The day recognizes the commitment, hard work, and dedication of Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) and people who work with young children.
As Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party and Premier, Ted Hsu will ensure that ECE’s receive higher wages, as well as a pension.
“Untenably low wages are driving qualified ECEs away,” says MPP Ted Hsu. “As Leader and Premier, I will change that, including pensions, which would be a game changer.”
Hsu’s economic policy pillar, entitled “Investing in our people,” speaks to the need to reinvest in childcare workers and spaces to support our families and our economy. Commonly, ECEs go back to school for teacher training or leave the sector so they will have better salary, benefits, pension, and job security. A loss of ECEs means a loss of childcare support, which makes it difficult for parents to fully participate in the labour force. The creation of a pension plan and a wage increase would ensure the retention of critical childcare workers.
Hsu was a stay-at-home dad for three years with his first child. He understands the value of childcare workers, that both moms and dads raise children, and that it is in Ontario’s economic interest to properly fund ECEs.
