The Ford's government's plans for Ontario Place are not transparent. The term of the lease is very long, 95 years, practically equivalent to a sale, and the lease itself has not been made public. The financial case for the deal with Therme is also not transparent and the identity of the beneficial owners of this foreign company are not known. The province has announced it is spending $200m for site servicing and has agreed to build underground parking, which should cost around $400m given the amount of underground parking proposed. No offsetting revenue for the province has been announced. The promised business case for moving the Ontario Science Centre has not been forthcoming.
In view of the above, and the benefits to the community of the existing Science Centre, I do not support moving the Ontario Science Centre.
I am not categorically opposed to private businesses operating on Ontario Place land. However any agreements should be transparent and preserve public access to Ontario Place.
